The blown glass heart was cold in her hand. The light of the dying Sun shot through the glass; reflecting with in it, all the colors of the rainbow.
”Soap bubble promises.” The whisper was soft in the cool twilight and the words shimmered in the air.
She held the heart up to the light, looking through the fragile glass into a world she could only dream of now. The colors looked blurry through the misty heart as they blended together in the sky.
Her thin fingers traced over the smooth surface of the trinket she held so carefully. There were no cracks on the glass; not even a finger print. It was a pure heart. The thought drew a laugh from her; a cold bitter sound that she hated..
She shook the heart shaped globe and watched as the glitter inside the glass danced around merrily. It sparkeled like ice; like pretty illusions.
“Look, but never touch” she muttered under her breath.
Suddenly, the feeling rose within her, a black wave of anger that tasted like acid as it climbed up her throat. Her eyes darkened and narrowed; her body tensing as the emotion coursed through her. Her fist closed tightly over the heart and she squeezed.
Red blurred the edge of her vision and she increased the pressure on the glass in her hand. The sound of cracking glass thrilled her and she clinched her fist harder, feeling the sharp shards of glass digging into her hand. As the heart crumbeled in her palm, blood mixed with the crystal and silver. Once every inch of the glass had been shattered, she looked down into her hand and saw the ruin there. A small smile of satisfaction played across her lips.
As night fell around her; shrouding her in it’s darkness, she opened her hand and let the glass fall. Much of it clung to her hand, held there by her blood and she brushed at it gently. All the glittering pieces of the heart fell down, down into the uncertain blackness below her and she turned her eyes away.
Beautiful Finnish band Him, would be acutely jealous of this.
Beautifully harsh. I especially like the "soap bubble" promises. Thanks.
